2001 - our 4th year

Our first major work: Rutter's Requiem

The two most significant undertakings of the choir in 2001 were our second CD recording and the first of our performances of a major choral work: Rutter's Requiem.

Our second CD

By 17 June we were ready to record our second CD: Take Another Coffee With ...

Rutter Requiem

Five months later, on 18 November 2001, LEC performed John Rutter's Requiem in St James Church, Sydney.  This was the furst time that LEC produced and performed a major choral work. It was a significant financial committment for the choir at this point because of the need to budget for venue hire and to employ the musicians for the excellent orchestra. The concert was very satisfying for the singers and popular with the audience.

End of year concerts

On 20 October LEC sang at Gathering of the Years to celebrate the centenary of the Sisters of the Good Samaritan at St Scholastica's School in Glebe. Then on 23 November we gave a Christmas concert at the lovely St Mary's Church in Balmain. Finally, on 14 December, we sang at the Waverley War Memorial Hospital's Carols by Candlelight.

Behind the scenes

Following our participation in the Festival Chorus performance of African Sanctus in 2000, several members of LEC travelled to Seattle in the USA to be part of a performance of this work.

The committee grappled with the need to fund both a CD recording and a major concert with orchestra. This was the first time that the choir had undertaken two such significant financial commitments in the one year. Without any financial reserves to fall back on, this was a significant commitment and one that the committee managed very well.

The committee realised that LEC needed to build a financial reserve that could be used to underwrite future concerts. As a first step, our first fund-raiser, a Trivia Night, was held on 23 June 2001.
