Michelle Leonard OAM is the founding Artistic Director and conductor of the Leichhardt Espresso Chorus and its chamber choir Ristretto. Michelle is also Artistic Director of the Moorambilla Voices Regional Children’s Choirs.  

Michelle’s work was featured in Wide Open Sky (directed by Lisa Nicol and winner of the Audience Award for Best Documentary at 2015 Sydney Film Festival) and Outback Choir (Heiress Films/ABC Australia), both documentaries about the Moorambilla Voices program released to wide acclaim.

Michelle is widely sought after as a choral clinician particularly on Australian repertoire and she facilitates compositional workshops for special projects. 

She has worked with both Gondwana and Sydney Children's Choirs and has conducted many of the major traditional choral works. She maintains an active interest in the promotion, commissioning, recording and performing of new Australian works for choirs for all the ensembles she leads.

Under Michelle's leadership, the Leichhardt Espresso Chorus was awarded the Best Community Outreach Award in the inaugural Music in Communities awards in 2008 and was state runner up in the ABC Classic FM choir of the year competition.

As a former councillor for the Music Council of Australia and National Representative for the Music in Communities Network, Michelle is actively involved in advocating for choirs through articles, presentations and workshops and was awarded the Order of Australia Medal for services to community and the performing arts in 2017.

Michelle is originally from Coonamble, and is the mother of four mad children!
